With Galatée secured at the marina of Mindelo, we take a ferry to the northwesternmost island of the archipelago, Santo Antao, choosing to stay a night on the island in order to trek a couple of routes to see the island's deep lush valleys, mountains and coastal cliffs. Our 2 day excursion turns out to be extraordinarily smooth. Stepping off the ferry we hop (hitch-hiking style actually, for a free ride) onto the minibus of four franco-swiss tourists (who we met the night before dining at Chez Lutcha in Mindelo). Then once off the minibus we meet local guide Boa, with his group of 2 French couples (Cathy and Bruno, Marie and Philippe) from Agen, south of Bordeaux, setting off on the same trek of the crater Cova of Paul. A truly enjoyable group of companions, we hit off well straight away, savouring along the way sights and smells and tastes of the rich and diverse flora of the island. Fig, mango, guava, banana, papaya, sugar cane, maize, cabbages, aloe vera, bread fruit, lemon, sweet potato and their Santo Antao coffee...we cannot name them all... The trekking route is impressively well maintained, built painstakingly by hand with stones and cobbles, descending a vertiginous cliff into a luxurious valley.
Boa then makes all the necessary calls to include us in their lunch arrangements at the village of Paul (a delicious meal under the shade of 2 gigantic almond trees), plus booking our transport and lodgings for the night at the coastal village of Cruzinha. Our 6 hour trek from Cruzinha to Ponta do Sol along the northwest coast of the island, with the numerous magnificent views, steep climbs and descents (and more and more climbs and descents... ) into the terraced valleys of Corvo and Fontainhas, will remain as one of the best treks we've ever done. Very tiring indeed, our bodies perspiring till our T-shirts are fully soaked, plus occasional cramps and giddiness from a (temporary) lack of sugar - rectified by fruit gums, cereal bars and local bananes, but an overall extremely satisfactory trek!
