Shu-In étant trop loin derrière...
21/9 evening – 22/9 morning : night sailing with quite a fair bit of engine and rain from Tenerife to La Restinga at the southern tip of El Hierro, the furthest south and west of the Canaries islands. We managed nevertheless to catch a northwesterly wind to raise the sails for the last 3 hours of the journey, with the rain thankfully stopping just enough time for us to dock at the little fishing port of La Restinga. Mooring Galatée safely was complicated by the pontoons being very recently damaged by some strong winds just some weeks (days?) ago, so we finally settled for a much too small pontoon but doubling our mooring ropes in view of the strong northeasterly winds forecasted for the next few days.
The rain (which we are told is the first since March) came and stayed the whole afternoon, allowing us to test our rain-catcher. Given that the marina provided neither water nor electricity, nor showers nor toilets, the additional water supply (almost 15 litres in a few hours!) was very much appreciated!
Checked out the town to source for a dive centre (there are at least 8), we found most of their shop fronts closed in the afternoon, except by chance Arrecifal, with Carlos, his wife Anita and a really cheerful and lively team of dive masters (Gabriel from Chili and Alberto from Madrid) and clients from Madrid (amongst others Miguel and Felix) and a very well equipped dive shop (fulfilling especially our need for hot showers for our stay at the island!).
23/9: Three dives at El Veril, Tacoron and El Salto – volcanic landscape, with cracks and arches home to jacks, groupers, and an amazing number of trumpet fishes. Late afternoon dive at El Salto specially to sight the 3 ‘bull’ sharks who have made their appearance rather regularly lately – and we were lucky to encounter (twice!) the larger female which was around 3,5 m long!
24/9: Two dives at El Bajón and El Rincon – a very short first dive at El Bajón abandoned due to strong swells upon our descent, catching us in an uncontrollable ‘washing machine’ situation. A much calmer second dive with sightings of moray eels (especially the yellow ‘Picopato’ or fangtooth moray) shrimps and scorpion-fishes despite a pretty bad visibility (we felt like we were in a Japanese seaweed soup that was incessantly being stirred).
A very special night out with Miguel and Felix at a restaurant in Mocanal (somewhere up north…, enjoying an assortment of very fresh fish, cuttlefish and ‘queso’) plus a surprise at the only ‘disco-bar’ at some obscure end of the island – El Submarino, which was actually closed for the weekend, where 4 very welcoming Venezuelan guys gave us a ‘private concert’ singing their hearts out with amazingly great voices for more than 2 hours non-stop into the wee-hours of the morning.
26/09 – 27/09 : Four morning dives at El Bajón, El Rio, Baja Bocarones and Barco Chino. The sea having calmed significantly over the last 2 days, these last few dives were marvelous with the 30 m visibility usually expected at El Hierro. With our little Olympus, we are trying to progress in our attempts of underwater photography. Though the photos are definitely not tip-top quality, they will serve as great memories of our dives with the Arrecifal team – to which we say a BIG Thank You!
