Açores / Azores - Faial (Horta)

08/06 – 12/06: Horta (Faial)

Horta, the choice landfall of cross-Atlantic yachts due to the excellence of its marina that is thus inevitably overcrowded, is famous for its colorful quays and walls which are densely decorated by thousands of crews of hundreds of yachts that arrive each year from their trans-Atlantic migration, continuing a tradition dating from ages ago. One docks into Horta without missing as well the famous Peter’s Café, THE meeting place for yachties in the Azores. A rather exciting atmosphere reigns in the marina and at the Cafe, of yachts and crew coming and going, exchanging experiences and stories. The town of Horta and its surroundings are also well worth the visit, notably with a majestic view of neighboring island’s Pico – when the sun is out (which is unfortunately not always the case during our short stay). After re-stocking the boat with food provisions and purchasing highly necessary spare parts for our precious Autopilot and a night’s navigation on the 12th (partially on engine to pass through the becalm between the islands of Pico and Sao Jorge) towards the island of Terceira, we dock into the marina of Angra do Heroismo, the jewel amongst the towns of the Archipelago.

Faial (Horta)

For as long as the sea and wind conditions permit, we leave Galatée at the anchorage of Lajes das Flores, alongside a handful of bigger yachts which, due to their size, are unfortunately unable to enter and moor at the tiny marina. The newly built marina of Lajes, not yet operational, is only just having its last pontoons put in place. On our third day, the swell starts entering the bay from the south east rolling the yachts excessively. Tired of not being able to sleep, let alone stand without falling, we finally lift our anchor to dock in the marina. The weather continues to deteriorate, the effects of the swells being felt even in the marina, putting the fenders and mooring ropes under a lot of stress.
Our stay in Flores turns out to be longer than we planned for, waiting for the winds to turn in our favor before heading for the island of Faial. Lajes das Flores, a traditional village untouched by tourism, welcomes nevertheless an increasing number of cross-Atlantic sailors with a warmth and genuine cordiality that overwhelms us. Life on this still rather rural island goes on casually, nonchalantly, to the rhythm of an ever-changing climate that switches from overcast grey to bright sunny blues (as they say, one can experience all 4 seasons in a day in the archipelago). We rent a car with the bright and cheerful Paula (she runs a one-stop shop for passing yachts) to tour the wilderness of Flores, a delightful introduction to the colors of Azores: its grey volcanic landscape covered with lush, dense and impenetrable eucalyptus forests with grounds matted with thick bright green moss; its acres and acres of grazing fields shielded by walls of charcoal grey stones; the omnipresence of herds and herds of black, white and brown cows, grazing or sharing the roads; and the white, blue or rose pink hydrangea blooms that line the roads and fields, all of which surrounded by the deep blue of the Atlantic ocean.
We set sail for Faial on 7th June, skies overcast with sheets of rain so dense that seem to close in on Flores, which disappears out of view in less than half a nautical mile behind us as we sail south-east.

Flores
