29/10 – 06/11: Dakar… Frankly, we can’t really say anything positive about the city. For immigration and administrative reasons in order to obtain our one-month sailing permit in Senegal, we have no choice but to brave the extremely congested and polluted roads by taxi to the port and central area in the city. Even getting to the nearest bank or discount grocery store gets us completely covered in dust!
A big ‘thumbs-up’ however for the CVD, a great team made up of both French and locals, a haven for passing sail boats to rest and share experiences around bottles of chilled beer (Gazelle) or Bissap fruit juice and local delicacies such as grilled fish accompanied with their ‘Yassa’ sauce (onion based sauce with vinegar and mustard and spices). Water refills, laundry service, mechanical or sail repairs, Wifi (on and off though) and a BBQ area…amenities that we greatly appreciate while waiting for the 2 postal packages (filters for our water system and spare autopilot belts) to arrive from France. The one and only unpleasant thing about being moored in the Bay of Hann, is its extremely polluted waters. Everything and anything disgusting from sewage, (human) waste, plastic etc to discarded fish from the fish market further north. In only a few days, Galatée is coated with a layer of dust and grime and grease…
One of the motivating factors therefore, for us to spend an afternoon at the Island of Gorée at the exterior of the Bay, where the water is crystal clear. Without any delay after mooring just south of the ferry pier, we wash down buckets of clean seawater for a thorough cleansing of the deck and cockpit, plus a scrubbing of the hull, at the same time rejoicing the possibility to snorkel and swim to our heart’s content! Before our overnight journey south to the river Sine Saloum, we spend the rest of the afternoon visiting the Island, laden with its history of the slave trade – thus very touristic – though nonetheless picturesque with its pastel colored colonial buildings. A great meal at ‘Chez Tonton’, beer and bissap, accompanying its famous local dish of spicy fish and rice!
