Once out of Salvador, the scenes change again. Exit the hustle and bustle of a busy town, and enter the (almost) wilderness of the rios of Bahia which really remind us of the rivers of Senegal, with beaches and coconut trees and mangroves. We make a few stops to shorten the duration of each journey south.
Bom Jardim - with several options of anchorages in the rio, we choose to anchor at Bom Jardim, further in along the rio, so as to distance ourselves from the many fishing boats and local taxi boats that speed through the anchorages. A good night's rest, and a couple of hours in the water the following morning cleaning Galatée's hull from the grime accumulated from Salvador's waters.
Ilheus - We make a stop at this provincial town (of no touristic interest whatsoever) only to finally complete the visa extension formalities with the Policia Federal. The mooring, exposed to the northern winds and swell, is terribly uncomfortable. Fortunately, the Yacht Club of Ilhéus provides free mooring buoys and transfer service to and from their floating pontoon, complete with a suspension drawbridge that seems to have come out of the movie sets of Lord of the Rings. Having to wait a day for a suitable weather window for our journey south, we profit from the excellent service and restaurant of the Club, with its swimming pool and showers, while we watch, with a (huge) pinch of worry nevertheless, Galatée at the mooring tugging and pulling violently at her mooring ropes like a wild horse trying to free itself of its reins....
Santo André - a very very shallow inlet, where local cruise boats 'escunas' animate the rio with their loud speakers and music and partying and camera clicking Brazilian clients. We anchor a little further from the restaurant Gaivota (so as to avoid being in the way of the escunas which discharge their load of clients to a neighbouring restaurant), run by a friendly couple offering not only very good food - fresh oysters and a hot delicious marmite of seafood, and also free showers, and a terrace with cushions allowing us to nap and relax!
