The anchorage area next to the marina is in fact now greatly reduced, due mainly to the installation of a separate group of finger pontoons in the northwest corner of the bay, owned by the Sport Fishing (and diving) club. The boats at the anchorage, looking like permanent occupants with weeds growing from the hulls, take up almost the totality of anchorable space, as such, we drop our anchor nearer the freighters (many of which are terribly rusty), as we did 5 years ago.
What a wonderful feeling to be back in Mindelo! The town is still so welcoming, clean, and convenient for customs administration, groceries, fish and vegetables markets, laundry, haircuts at 3€ etc. The difference, is the reinforced security, with (as we understand) an effective wipe out of previously disturbing hooligan gangs by the Police in the last few years. The result, for us, is the ability to leave Galatée safely at the marina in the evenings, for us to fully appreciate the restaurants and bars, with very often live bands crooning the hypnotising and beautiful capeverdien 'morna' folk music, and young agile dancers too! We chance upon a staged concert on the main street, attended by locals of all age groups, amongst which quite a few lovely capeverdien girls, swaying away in a totally relaxing atmosphere, and on Sunday morning, we hear the soothing chorus of the church just up the main street from the marina...
