Detroit de Le Maire_Le Maire Straits

Endroit à sinistre réputation, le détroit de Le Maire est connu pour ses forts courants et turbulences qui peuvent créer, quand ils s'opposent au vent, des vagues stationnaires démentielles. Il s'agit donc ici de bien choisir sa fenêtre météo et de passer avec la bonne marée.  La fenêtre du 27 janvier s'annonce excellente: vent du N, NW modéré avec le jusant (qui porte au Sud) au petit matin. Elle sera effectivement excellente et permettra à nos trois voiliers de faire bonne route en sécurité dans une mer gérable mais tout de même plus formée que la force du vent (15 a 20 nds) ne laisserait présumer. Nous faisons notre approche du mouillage de Puerto Espanol en début de soirée pour retrouver Robusta et nos compagnons qui nous font un accueil de fête au son de l'accordéon de Jean-Loup! Au menu du soir, les pommes de terre de Robusta qui doivent toutes disparaitre avant l'arrivée à Puerto Williams et les contrôles sanitaires. Demain, grand programme: l'entrée dans le canal Beagle!

The Le Maire Straits, a notorious passage with its reputation of strong currents and tide rips which can create, in situations when currents oppose winds, standing waves of horrifying heights.  Accordingly, we have to choose a suitable weather window and cross with the currents in our favour.  The 27th January, with moderate north-northwest winds and the south-bound ebb, we leave Puerto Hoppner in the early morning, crossing the Straits in security with sea conditions that, though manageable, are slightly rougher than what we had expected with the 15-20 knots of winds. We arrive at the anchorage of Puerto Espanol in the early evening, where we are warmly welcomed by our companions Robusta, Kalibu and Yao!, celebrating together our crossing of the Le Maire Straits with music and a huge potato salad (courtesy of Robusta, who is trying to reduce their stock of potatoes to avoid sanitary check issues upon their arrival in Chile - Puerto Williams).  Then, to bed, as it will be a great day tomorrow: we enter the Beagle Channel!
