We make our way into the buoyed but shallow channel (our sounder shows less than 2 metres in some parts of the channel) on the River Kourou on 16/2, and anchor just upstream of the fishermen's wharf. We are practically at the doorstep of the market where fresh fish are available everyday (acoupa, grouper, ray, shark, jackfish, sea bass...) and, on the main street leading to town where there is a good butcher, saturday's colourful fruit and vegetables market as well as some chinese-run groceries, a few restaurants, a well stocked pharmacy and a gas station a little further near the town hall. We spend the late morning of Saturday 17/2 at the market and lunch at the 'Le Flamengo' (créole cuisine). To our surprise Arnaud (Laurent's ex-colleague from Bordeaux) and his kids turn up in their car as we are walking back to the wharf! In fact, this very morning we manage to connect to the internet and update our position, thus notifying our arrival in Kourou. A very enjoyable weekend, thus, despite the weather (squalls), in the company of Arnaud and Florence and kids.

Meteo France announces heavy rain for Tuesday, the day we drive to Cayenne, but we are lucky with the weather this day, to be able to appreciate our few hours of strolling in quaint and colonial Cayenne without a single drop of rain and a delicious lunch (authentic French food!) at the very popular Bar des Palmistes.

Back in Kourou, the guided tour of the Space Centre is an eye-opener to the world of space launchers - Ariane 5, Soyouz and Vega, with very good commentaries by CSG's (Centre Spatial Guyanais) hosts and hostesses, actually going to the Soyouz and the Ariane 5 launch sites, and several impressive videos. Unfortunately, the next planned launch of Ariane 5 for 16th March will be too late for us in our timing to head north.

All the same, our week-long stay in Kourou has been great, complete with a lunchtime visit on Galatee of Arnaud, Florence, Nicolas and Guillaume plus 6 kids crowding the cockpit!
