Puerto Williams

Leaving Argentina, we head back east towards Puerto Williams, 20 miles away on the other side of the Beagle Channel. Chile's most southern naval (Armada) base, boasting the world's most southern yacht club the Micalvi, Puerto Williams is the starting point of our journey north into the Chilean channels set in a peaceful, quiet town with horses grazing everywhere. With impressive efficiency and friendly smiles from all officials, we complete our entry formalities of immigration, customs and sanitary (food) checks. At the Micalvi (Club Naval, created by the running aground of the ship Micalvi, that serves thus as the pontoon), run and maintained by the Armada, the atmosphere amongst the yachties is great.  Unable nor willing to get ourselves a place alongside the many incoming and outgoing yachts (of which, many big charter yachts), we stay at the mooring buoy just opposite Micalvi, which is not too bad, as getting squeezed by the larger yachts is not at all to our liking. Wonderful evenings with all the yachties, with grilled meats deliciously cooked by Markku (Caramia), reuniting with Terja (Caramia), and also with Kalibu, Robusta, Yao! (with lots of music from JeanLoup and Marianne) and Houba (our Bordeaux friends who we previously met in Senegal! ), and of course downing many bottles of Argentinean and Chilean wines, in the warmth and comfort of the Micalvi saloons equipped with wood-stoves, whilst admiring the views of the snow-capped mountains of Ile Navarino. Armed with our 'zarpe' (Armada's authorisation for our journey north to Valdivia), and the indispensable Atlas (detailed paper charts of the channels), we head into the glaciers' route via the Beagle Channel, into the 'wild'!
