26/06 – 29/06: Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel )
Leaving Terceira in the early morning of 26th June – in the cold and in the dark, not having slept nor ate sufficiently due to a late night out (and thus, a serious hangover…which is not good at all we know) with Iod and Gatorali with whom we bade farewell as Thomas and Gabrielle head next towards Santa-Maria and then onwards to Marseille, we set our sails towards Sao Miguel, with the objective of accomplishing at least one (sunny) day-sail trip in the archipelago. Established south-south-westerlies blowing as forecasted, we dock in the new and barely filled marina of Ponta Delgada (the capital of the archipelago islands) well before night fall.
With less than 3 days before the next favorable weather window to northern Spain, we nevertheless manage to prepare Galatée for our return trip as well as visit the main attractions of Sao Miguel. The panoramic views of the lakes of Sete Citade are especially captivating on a clear sunny day; its village (less touristic than we expected) lying on the banks of Lagoa Azul provides an almost Swiss-like and idyllic backdrop for an after-lunch stroll. And a final tour together with Philippe, Fabienne and Tom to Furnas, for a dip in the hot (38ºC!) spring pool of Terra Nostra, and Lagoa das Furnas where holes dug next to the volcanic hot springs provide ideal natural cooking stoves available for anyone who wishes to prepare a huge pot of food that cooks for over 6 hours…
