26 – 29/10: Not exactly the most comfortable ride indeed…Beating or close reaching, with a northwesterly swell rocking us incessantly from the port side, we are obliged to keep our balance at all times by holding onto something, with BOTH hands, thus not leaving much to do anything else…For once we had been contented with just the GRIB weather files of NOAA, and had omitted to follow weather reports of Radio France International on the possible passage of tropical waves. So there… approaching the coastline of Dakar early in the morning before dawn, the lightning appearing before us like distant fireworks giving a bright orange glow to the skies above Dakar…but when the tropical wave pass right above us, it is really much less fun….in short, strong southeasterly winds, a rough sea with swells dead in the nose, forcing us to head back out towards the ocean to wait out the passing of the wave. We are not in any danger, but this detour to wait for calmer seas takes us more than 2 hours. Thereafter, despite diminishing winds and our faithful PERKINS engine, we make our way back into the Bay of Hann, painfully, against the still very rough sea. We finally drop our anchor 6 hours later in the Bay of Hann, in front of the sailing club of CVD (Cercle de Voile de Dakar).
